Trojans Sweep Opening Day Doubleheader

The Charles Henderson Trojans started the 2014 campaign off with a bang by defeating Elba 13-4 and Dothan 7-0. In game one against Elba senior Blake Craft went five innings on the mound and struck out eleven. Cole Wilson pitched the final two frames and struck out five. Hunter Baggett drove in the first run of the season on an RBI single that plated Reiley Fox from third after his triple. A five run 4th inning that began with a triple off the bat of Xavius Burden stretched the lead to 6-2. The Trojans would tack on two runs in the 5th, one in the 6th, and five in the 7th to put the game away. Baggett finished with two hits as did Fox and Wilson. Austin Ingram and Chase Smartt both added run-scoring doubles.

In game two senior John Michael Stephens went the distance on the mound and struck out six. He did not allow a runner past second base. Ingram got the Trojans on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two run blast to straight-away centerfield. CHHS would not strike again until the 5th inning when Nick Lewis led the inning off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt from Jason Fleming, Fox drove in Lewis with a single. A triple from John Johnson drove in Fox and Smartt followed with his second double of the day to score Johnson. Johnson's sac fly to centerfield in the 7th to score Lewis from third base closed out the scoring for the Trojans.

Charles Henderson returns to the field Thursday for their home opener against Slocomb at 4:30.

Trojans Sweep Alabama Christian, Advance to Quarterfinals

Charles Henderson came away with two victories over Alabama Christian Friday night to win the second round match-up and advance to the quarterfinals.

Game one was an 11-1 victory for the Trojans. Houston Mabray got the win on the mound working a complete game and striking out two while scattering five hits. Juniors John Johnson and Xavius Burden were both 4-4 in the game. Joey Denison was 2-3 with a double.

In game two Tripp Blackmon got the start and worked five strong innings and struck out three. Burden came on in relief in the sixth and earned the win working two innings striking out one. Junior Hunter Baggett led the way offensively going 4-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. The game was tied at four entering the bottom of the sixth after Burden stranded runners at 1st and 3rd to end the top half. With one out Burden was hit by a pitch and replaced with pinch-runner Reiley Fox. Morgan Shaver reached on a fielders choice and stole second base. Baggett delivered a single to score Shaver and give CHHS a 5-4 lead. Blackmon reached on an error that scored Baggett. Chase Smartt then capped the Trojan scoring with a single to score Blackmon. ACA scored a run in the top of the seventh to close the margin to 7-5 but Burden induced a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

The Trojans host Beauregard Friday at 4:30 in the quarterfinal round of the AHSAA playoffs. Friday is a doubleheader and a third game will be played Saturday at 1:00 if necessary.

Baggett Named to North-South All-Star Roster

Junior shortstop Hunter Baggett was selected to represent the South team at the North-South All-Star game this summer at Riverwalk Stadium. The event is hosted by the AHSAA/AHSADCA and is in conjuntion with All-Star week in Montgomery.

Baggett has started every game at shortstop this season for the Trojans and is currently batting .393 with six doubles and 19 RBIs. He is the third middle infielder selected from CHHS to play in the All-Star game in the last four years. Jalin Lawson and Chance Shaver both played shortstop for the South squad in 2011 and 2010, respectively. K.D. Edenfield also represented CHHS in 2010 as an outfielder.

Trojans Sweep Brew Tech

Charles Henderson came away with a sweep in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs Saturday afternoon by defeating Brew Tech 3-1 and 20-1.

In game one, Houston Mabray pitched a complete game and struck out 11 hitters without allowing an earned run. Brew Tech grabbed an early lead when leadoff hitter Doug Brown doubled down the left field line and scored later in the inning to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Trojans answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Joey Denison singled to drive in Tripp Blackmon who reached on a single earlier in the inning. Courtesy runner Reilly Fox scored later in the inning when John Johnson reached on an error to make the score 2-1 after one inning. Morgan Shaver led off the second inning with a single and scored later in the inning to make the score 3-1.

The big defensive play for the Trojans came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With CHHS leading 3-1, Brew Tech's Corn Madison doubled down the left field line. Darreus Zanders was on second base and attempted to score on the hit, but leftfielder Austin Ingram delivered a strike to catcher Chase Smartt to throw out Zanders, end the inning, and protect the Trojans' lead.

In game two the bats came alive for Charles Henderson as they exploded for 20 runs. CHHS scored one run in the first frame, nine in the fourth, and 10 in the sixth. Hunter Baggett led off the game with a walk and was driven in by a single off the bat of Smartt to give the Trojans the early advantage. Charles Henderson blew the game open in the fourth inning with RBIs from Luke Hastings, Johnson, Shaver, Baggett, Blackmon, Smartt, and Denison. In the bottom of the fourth inning Owen Reese hit a double for Brew Tech that scored a run to make the score 10-1. In the top of the sixth Baggett led off with a single. After he was forced out on a Blackmon groundout, the Trojans sent twelve consecutive hitters to the plate without recording an out. Blake Craft had a double and RBI in the inning and Rhett Tucker drove in a run with a single. Cole Wilson and Reilly Fox each singled and Jason Fleming drove in a run.

Senior Tripp Blackmon pitched all six innings on the mound striking out five and allowing only two hits.

Charles Henderson will travel to Alabama Christian on Friday for a second round match-up. There will be a double header on Friday and a third game on Saturday if necessary.

Trojans Ranked #1 in Final ASWA Poll

Charles Henderson ended the year in the same position it began the year in the ASWA polls, at the top. The Trojans were ranked #1 in all seven polls released in the 2013 season. This is the 44th consecutive poll that has included CHHS, dating back to the first poll of the 2007 season.

Central-Florence is ranked second this week followed by Brooks and Guntersville. In the five spot is Thomasville followed by UMS-Wright and Beauregard. Alexandria, Childersburg, and Bibb County round out the top ten.

Trojans Defeat Brantley on Senior Night

Charles Henderson honored the seven seniors in the class of 2013 and picked up its 30th win Saturday night with a 5-2 victory over Brantley. John Michael Stephens pitched six innings in relief and struck out ten to keep Brantley in check.

Three seniors drove in RBIs in the first inning to get the Trojans out to an early 4-0 lead. Joey Denison and Luke Hastings each drove in runs before Rhett Tucker ripped a double down the left field line to score two more runners. Senior Morgan Shaver drove in the fifth run of the night with a single in the fifth inning. John Johnson added a double on the night and Hunter Baggett had a single and three walks.

The members of the 2013 Senior class are Tripp Blackmon, Joey Denison, Luke Hastings, Brantley LeCroy, Houston Mabray, Morgan Shaver, and Rhett Tucker.

CHHS will host a first round playoff series with Brewbaker Tech beginning Friday at 4:30. The third game will be played Saturday at 1:00 if necessary.

Trojans Split with Wildcats

Charles Henderson traveled to Enterprise Saturday afternoon and split a doubleheader with the Wildcats.

The Trojans dropped game one by a score of 8-1. Austin Ingram drove in the lone CHHS run with a sac fly to left field in the 6th inning. Morgan Shaver finished the game 2-3 with two singles. Tripp Blackmon, Chase Smartt, Joey Denison, and Luke Hastings all had hits.

CHHS bounced back in game two with a 13-2 win in six innings. Starter Xavius Burden went five innings and struck out two. Ingram pitched a scoreless sixth inning. The Trojans got the bats going early, starting the game with four consecutive hits off the bats of Hunter Baggett, Blackmon, Smartt, and Denison to jump out to a 3-0 lead after one inning. After Enterprise answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, CHHS scored three runs in the third inning, four in the fourth inning, and three more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 13-2. Denison finished the game a perfect 4-4 with a double and four RBIs. Smartt had a double and triple and drove in two. Hastings had two singles and three RBIs, while John Johnson had two singles and a stolen base. Baggett was 2-3 with a double and Blake Craft had a two RBI single.

Charles Henderson will host Senior Night for the class of 2013 Tuesday night against Brantley. The Senior Night program will begin at 4:45 and first pitch is set for 5:00.

CHHS Sweeps Ashford to Claim Area Title

Charles Henderson completed area play unbeaten after a 13-3 victory of Ashford Tuesday afternoon in Troy and a 7-5 victory in Ashford on Wednesday. The wins improved the Trojans to 28-2 on the year.

On Tuesday the heart of the order did most of the damage in the 13-3 victory. Chase Smartt doubled in three runs and scored two. Joey Denison was 3-3 with two doubles, and RBI, and two runs scored. Austin Ingram was 2-4 with two doubles and drove in four runs. Xavius Burden, Morgan Shaver, and Hunter Baggett each added hits as well.

Houston Mabray got the start on the mound and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings of work. Burden closed out the game with 1 2/3 scoreless relief and four strikeouts.

On Wednesday Tripp Blackmon got the start and pitched seven innings striking out four and did not allow an earned run. Ingram pitched a perfect seventh inning to get the save.

Denison stayed hot with a 3-4 day at the plate and an RBI. Ingram added two hits and Burden was 2-4 with a double and RBI. Luke Hastings, Hunter Baggett, and John Johnson each had two singles.

With the victories the Trojans secured the Area 3 championship. CHHS will host a first round playoff series on Friday, April 19.

Charles Henderson will travel to Enterprise to take on the Wildcats and Robert E. Lee. The first game will begin at Noon.

Trojans Sweep Headland

CHHS traveled to Headland Friday night and swept the Rams by scores of 4-2 and 11-1. The wins improved the Trojans' record to 26-2 overall and 4-0 in 4A, Area 3 play.

Tripp Blackmon's performance on the mound and clutch hit in the 7th inning paced the Trojans in game one. He pitched a complete game, striking out six and not allowing an earned run. Charles Henderson trailed 2-0 entering the sixth inning when Chase Smartt doubled down the right field line for the Trojans' first hit of the game. Joey Denison followed with a single to drive in Smartt and put CHHS on the board. Trailing 2-1 in the 7th inning, John Johnson led off with a single and was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Xavius Burden. Down to his final strike in a 2-2 count, Hunter Baggett fouled off two pitches before drawing a walk. Blackmon was also down to his final strike before lacing a single down the right field line to score Johnson and tie the game at 2. Blackmon advanced to second base on the throw to third. He and Baggett were driven in on Smartt's single to center field to give the Trojans their first lead of the day at 4-2. Blackmon worked a three up-three down 7th inning to close out the win.

In game two the late inning heroics were not needed as CHHS cruised to an 11-1 victory in six innings. Smartt started the scoring in the first inning with a two run homerun to put the Trojans ahead 2-0. Denison drove in a run in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0. CHHS pulled away in the fourth inning with four runs off the bats of Smartt, Denison, and Luke Hastings. Rhett Tucker led off the sixth inning with a pinch hit double that sparked a four run inning and ended the game.

Hastings got the start on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out seven. Blake Craft pitched the fifth inning and struck out two. Ingram finished the game with a scoreless sixth inning and a strikeout.

Area 3 play continues on Tuesday when CHHS hosts Ashford at 4:30.

Mabray, Johnson Lead Trojans to Extra-Inning Victory

Senior Houston Mabray pitched a complete game on the mound and John Johnson' s third hit of the game in the 8th inning drove in the winning run as CHHS defeated Area 3 foe Headland by a score of 4-3.

Mabray worked all eight innings and faced the minimum through six. He did not allow an earned run and struck out five.

After 3 1/2 scoreless innings the Trojans grabbed the lead when Austin Ingram, Luke Hastings, and John Johnson all singled to start the 4th inning. Xavius Burden and Morgan Shaver each followed with sacrifice flies to give the Trojans a 2-0 edge. Hunter Baggett followed with a double that scored Johnson to make the score 3-0.

Three unearned runs in the top of the 7th for Headland forced extra innings. Neither team scored in the 7th but Joey Denison led off the bottom of the 8th with a single for CHHS. After a strikeout, Hastings reached on a fielders choice. Hastings stole second, and was driven in by Johnson on a basehit to left field for the walk-off victory.

Charles Henderson improved to 24-2 and 3-0 in area play with the victory. Area play continues tomorrow when the Trojans travel to Headland for a 5:00 double header.

Trojans Take Down Alabama Christian

A trio of Trojans pitchers combined to hold Alabama Christian to four hits as CHHS improved to 23-2 with a 10-2 victory. Xavius Burden got things started on the mound and worked three innings striking out three. Blake Craft came on in the fourth inning and struck out three without allowing a run. Austin Ingram closed out the game by retiring three consecutive batters in the seventh.

After ACA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Joey Denison propelled CHHS into the lead with a three run blast that scored Hunter Baggett and Tripp Blackmon. Later in the inning Morgan Shaver singled in two runs and Craft scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-2. Burden and Shaver both picked up RBIs in the second inning to stretch the lead to 8-2. Blackmon hit a two run shot off the right field foul pole to cap the scoring and make it a 10-2 Trojan victory.

Charles Henderson returns to area play Thursday at home against Headland. The JV plays at 4:00 and the Varsity will follow at 6:00.

Trojans Defeat Baldwin Co. to Win Pool

Senior Houston Mabray pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Trojans over Baldwin County by a score of 9-0. With the victory, CHHS won their pool in the Gulf Shores Classic which included 6A schools Baldwin County and Austin, as well as two ranked teams in Huntsville (#4 in 6A) and Southside-Gadsden (#6 in 5A).

Charles Henderson struck first with RBI singles from Austin Ingram and Luke Hastings in the first inning. In the third inning Ingram, Blake Craft, and Morgan Shaver each had RBIs to extend the lead to 5-0. A leadoff double by Chase Smartt set the table for another big inning in the fourth inning. He was driven in by Joey Denison. Following a walk to Ingram, Hastings drove in another run with a single. Ingram had another RBI double in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 9-0.

The Trojans are now 22-2 on the season.

Trojans Sweep Huntsville, Austin

CHHS improved to 21-2 on the year with a sweep of two 6A opponents, Huntsville and Austin. The 21-2 mark is the best ever by a Charles Henderson team. The 1980 squad opened the season 20-0 before dropping two games. The 2007 team was 19-1 out of the gate.

In game one the Trojans defeated Huntsville, the #4 team in 6A, by a score of 7-4. Starting pitcher Xavius Burden gave up four runs in the first inning but settled down to strike out three and didn't allow another run. Luke Hastings relieved Burden in the fifth and pitched 2 1/3 of scoreless relief for the save.

After a two run first inning CHHS took the lead in the third inning when Tripp Blackmon singled and Chase Smartt doubled. Joey Denison and Austin Ingram each followed with RBI singles to tie the game at four. Luke Hastings bunted the runners over to allow Blake Craft to drive in Ingram. Craft added an RBI single in the fifth to extend the lead and Ingram's RBI single in the sixth pushed the score to 7-4.

In game two CHHS defeated Austin 11-1 in six innings. Senior Tripp Blackmon pitched all six innings and struck out eight. Denison was 3-3 with an RBI and Morgan Shaver was 3-3 with two RBI. Baggett and Blackmon each drove in two runs.

Charles Henderson concludes pool play in the Gulf Coach Classic Wednesday against Baldwin County High School at Baldwin County. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00.

Trojans' Win Streak Snapped at 14

Charles Henderson fell in their opening game of the Gulf Coast Classic Monday night to 5A #3 Southside-Gadsden by a score of 11-3. The Trojans dropped to 19-2 on the season. Joey Denison was 1-3 and scored two runs while Luke Hastings had an RBI. Brantley LeCroy, Blake Craft, and John Michael Stephens all pitched for the Trojans.

Tournament play continues Tuesday morning at 10:00 am as the Trojans take on the #6 ranked team in 6A, Huntsville High School. At 12:30 pm the Trojans will face Austin High School.

Trojans Overcome 7 Run Deficit to Win 14th Consecutive Game

CHHS rallied for eight runs in the final two innings to erase an 8-1 deficit and defeat Stanhope-Elmore by a score of 9-8. It extended the Trojans' win streak to 14 and their 19-1 record is the best start for a CHHS team since the 2007 squad also started the season 19-1.

Charles Henderson struck first with an RBI double off the bat of Chase Smartt in the first inning to score Tripp Blackmon and give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Mustangs struck for three runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth inning, including a grand slam. Trailing 8-1, CHHS began the comeback in the fifth when Blackmon singled with two outs. After stealing second he was driven in by Smartt. Senior Joey Denison then followed with a mammoth two-run blast over the blue monster in left field to draw the Trojans closer at 8-4. In the sixth Luke Hastings led off with a single and John Johnson was hit by a pitch. Blake Craft followed with a single and Morgan Shaver reached on an error that scored Hastings. Baggett then singled home Johnson to make it 8-6. Blackmon's sacrifice fly scored Craft and brought up Smartt, who once again came through with an RBI single to knot the game at 8-8. Denison then singled home Baggett to complete the comeback and give CHHS a 9-8 advantage. Austin Ingram then closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning to give the Trojans the victory.

Smartt finished 3-4 with three RBI, Denison was 3-4 with 3 RBI, and Johnson was 1-1 with two stolen bases. Ingram picked up the win in relief working 2 2/3 innings and striking out two.

The Trojans travel to Gulf Shores Monday to participate in the Gulf Coast Classic Tournament. The first game is against third ranked team in 5A, Southside-Gadsden on Monday at 5:30.

Trojans Sweep Andalusia, UMS Wright

Charles Henderson improved to 18-1 on the year with victories over Andalusia and #6 UMS Wright at Troy University on Friday.

In the 7-5 victory over Andalusia Xavius Burden got the win in relief working 2 2/3 innings and striking out two while allowing only one hit. Tripp Blackmon got the start and went 4 1/3 striking out one. Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the 6th the bottom of the Trojan lineup sparked a big inning. John Johnson reached on an error and was followed by a double off the bat of Blake Craft. Morgan Shaver followed with an RBI double to tie the game, then Hunter Baggett hit a sac fly to give CHHS the lead. Blackmon grounded out to second to score Shaver from third and extend the lead to 7-5. Craft finished 2-2 with a double and RBI. Chase Smartt drove in two runs and Baggett was 2-3 with an RBI. Joey Denison was also 2-3 with a double.

Game two was a match-up between two top-ten teams in the ASWA poll and the Trojans pulled out a 4-3 victory. Senior Houston Mabray pitched a complete game and struck out four to earn the win. Charles Henderson struck first with two runs in the first inning. Smartt singled and was followed by a Denison walk. It was followed by an Austin Ingram single that drove them both in. The Bulldogs answered with two in the 4th inning to tie the game. The Trojans answered in the 5th when Ingram reached on a walk and moved to third on a Luke Hastings single. A balk scored Ingram and moved Hastings to second. Johnson then scored Hastings on a triple to right-center field to extend the lead to 4-2. UMS Wright scored a run in the 7th and had the tying run on second and go ahead run on first when Mabray enduced a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

The Trojans are back in action today at home. At 11:00 they take on Stanhope-Elmore at Hogan's Hole and at 5:00 they face Sipsey Valley at Troy University.

Trojans Remain Atop 4A Standings

For the third consecutive week Charles Henderson is ranked #1 by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. The Trojans have now been ranked in the top ten in 40 consecutive ASWA Top Ten polls, dating back to the initial poll of the 2007 season. That is a span of 6 1/2 seasons.

Checking in at #2 is Central-Florence followed by Beauregard, Thomasville, and Alexandria. UMS-Wright is ranked sixth, and will travel to Troy Friday night for a match-up with Charles Henderson to be played at Troy University. At #7 is Guntersville, #8 is Jacksonville, #9 is Alabama Christian, and rounding out the top ten is Ardmore.

CHHS hosts Andalusia and UMS-Wright Friday at Troy University. The Trojans will play at 4:00 and 8:00.

Trojans Retain #1 Ranking

After a 5-0 week Charles Henderson remains atop the ASWA rankings. The Trojans earned victories over Marbury, LAMP, and Providence Christian on their way to winning the Jason Armstrong Memorial FCA Tournament in Montgomery. They also defeated Rehobeth twice on Tuesday to improve to 14-1.

Central-Florence claimed the #2 spot and was followed by Beauregard, Thomasville, and UMS-Wright. At #6 is Guntersville then Alexandria at #7. Rounding out the top ten is Alabama Christian, Jacksonville, and Ardmore.

CHHS begins area play on Friday when they travel to Union Springs to take on Bullock County. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00.

Trojans Sweep Rehobeth

Charles Henderson returned home for the first time in over a week and picked up two wins over Rehobeth Tuesday night.

Chase Smartt's walk-off double scored Hunter Baggett in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to give the Trojans a 5-4 victory. Smartt finished the game 2-4 with two RBI and Joey Denison also added two hits and an RBI. Rehobeth jumped out to a 4-0 advantage but the Trojans answered in the bottom of the third when Blake Craft led off with a single. Morgan Shaver bunted Craft over and Baggett reached on an error. Tripp Blackmon, Smartt, and Denison each singled and drove in a run to bring the score to 4-3. CHHS tied the game in the fifth when Joey Denison singled and eventually scored on Luke Hastings' sacrifice fly to center field. The score remained 4-4 until Smartt's double in the final frame.

Houston Mabray got the start on the mound and went five innings striking out three. Xavius Burden pitched two innings of relief without giving up a hit to earn the win.

In game two the Trojans pounded the Rebels by a score of 13-1. Blackmon went all five innings on the mound striking out three. CHHS scored one run in the first on Denison's sacrifice fly to score Baggett, then put the game out of reach with seven runs in the second inning. John Johnson got the inning going with a single and was followed by a single Burden. Blackmon, Smartt, Denison, and Hastings each drove in runs during the inning. The final runs for CHHS came in the third inning on a three run blast from Denison.

The Trojans begin area play Friday at Bullock County at 3:00.

Trojans Win FCA Tournament Title

CHHS defended it's 2012 Jason Armstrong Memorial FCA Tournament title by winning the 2013 tournament on Saturday at Paterson Field in Montgomery. CHHS was the only team to finish the tournament 4-0. The Trojans defeated LAMP 12-0 in six innings and Providence Christian 6-3.

Against LAMP, Xavius Burden was 2-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Chase Smartt added two singles and an RBI while Hunter Baggett also singled twice. Austin Ingram hit a solo homerun down the leftfield line and Morgan Shaver was 2-3 with a double and RBI. On the mound Luke Hastings got the start and worked four strong innings striking out three. Blake Craft came on to pitch the final two innings and did allow a hit.

In game two, Denison gave CHHS the early lead with a first inning double to drive in Smartt. He doulbed again in the third to drive in Smartt and Baggett who each singled earlier in the inning. Providence scored two unearned in the fifth to tie the game at three, but Ingram answered for the Trojans with a double that scored Denison from second. Luke Hastings followed with a single that scored Ingram to push the lead to 5-3. Rhett Tucker led off the seventh with a sharp single to right and was replaced by pinch-runner Reiley Fox. Tripp Blackmon's single scored Fox to give the Trojans the 6-3 margin of victory.

Brantley LeCroy got the start on the mound and went three innings and did not allow an earned run. Burden came on in relief in the fourth and pitched three innings and struck out one. Ingram entered in the seventh and earned the save.

CHHS allowed an unearned run in the second inning that broke a string of 28 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

The Trojans return to Hogan's Hole on Tuesday to face Rehobeth in a 4:30 doubleheader.
