Top Ranked Russell County Knocks Out CHHS

Charles Henderson was knocked out of the AHSAA playoffs Friday night by the top ranked team in the state, Russell County. The Warriors took game one by a score of 7-5 and game two 7-3.

In game one Houston Mabray got the start and worked all seven innings, striking out three. Joey Denison was 1-3 with a grand slam, raising his season total for RBI to 51. Gregory Barnette, Michael Thomas, Michael Fox, and Tripp Blackmon each added singles.

In game two Blackmon got the start and worked a complete game striking out three. He also had an RBI triple. Austin Adler also added an RBI. Barnette, Jalin Lawson, and Chase Smartt each had hits.

The losses marked the final games as CHHS Trojans for seniors Gregory Barnette, Michael Fox, Jalin Lawson, Michael Thomas, and Austin Adler. They amassed a total of 108 wins in their four years at CHHS and remained ranked in the top ten during every ASWA poll of their high school career. This year they extended CHHS' consecutive playoff appearances to 14 while winning the area three championship and the FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Tournament.

Charles Henderson Sweeps Tallassee in First Round

Charles Henderson advanced to the second round of the AHSAA playoffs Friday night with a doubleheader sweep of Tallassee at Hogan's Hole. The Trojans won game one by a score of 3-2 in 8 innings when Tripp Blackmon's single to right field scored Joey Denison from second base. Houston Mabray pitched all eight innings for CHHS and struck out two while only allowing four hits. The Trojans struck first in the second inning when Austin Adler's RBI double plated Blackmon. Tallassee knotted the game at 1 in the 4th inning, but the Trojans regained the lead in the fifth inning when Denison's sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Michael Fox from third base. A Tiger run in the sixth made the score 2-2, and it remained until Blackmon's walk-off single in the eighth.

In game two the Trojans again relied on a late-inning rally to secure the win. The Trojans were the visitors in game two. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning, when Denison led off with a walk and moved to second on Chase Smartt's bunt for a base hit. Blackmon followed with a single, loading the bases for Luke Hastings. With Denison on third, Hastings executed a squeeze bunt to score the game's first run and give CHHS a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch scored courtesy runner Morgan Shaver from third base and Austin Adler's RBI groundout pushed across courtesy runner Hunter Baggett to make the score 3-0. Blackmon pitched a complete game on the mound, striking out four on four hits.

The Trojans will host top-ranked Russell County in the second round. Russell County swept Rehobeth Friday night to advance.

CHHS #5 in Final ASWA Poll

The Trojans checked in at #5 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association poll for the 2012 season. The ranking extended CHHS' streak of consecutive polls to 37, dating back to the start of the 2007 season. Russell County remained the top ranked team in the state followed by Hueytown, Spanish Fort, and Cullman. The Trojans are fifth, then Hartselle, Briarwood Christian, and Chilton County. Area 3 foe Rehobeth finished #9, and St. Paul's rounded out the top ten.

In 2011 the Trojans finished ranked 8th, 1st in 2010, and 8th in 2009. In 2008 CHHS finished 3rd, and 5th in 2007.

CHHS Falls to Enterprise in Regular Season Finale

CHHS fell one run short on Senior Day and lost an 8-7 decision to Enterprise. Houston Mabray, Tripp Blackmon, Michael Fox, and Luke Hastings all pitched for the Trojans, who open up the 5A playoffs this Friday against Tallassee. Fox was saddled with the loss. CHHS knotted the score at 7 in the fourth inning when Joey Denison's grand slam was followed by a solo home run off the bat of Chase Smartt. The Wildcats scored a run in the sixth on a wild pitch to regain the lead.

Denison finished 2-3 with four RBI and Smartt was 2-4. Morgan Shaver was 2-3 with an RBI and Michael Fox was 2-4 with a triple and RBI.

The game marked the final regular season home game for five CHHS seniors, who were honored before the game. They are Austin Adler, Gregory Barnette, Michael Fox, Jalin Lawson, and Michael Thomas.

The Trojans' first round matchup begins with a doubleheader against Tallassee Friday at 4:30 at CHHS. A third game will be played Saturday at 1:00, if necessary.

Trojan Infielders Set State Record for Double Plays

In the Trojans April 13 victory over Northview, the CHHS infield comprised of Luke Hastings (3B), Michael Fox (SS), Jalin Lawson (2B), and Joey Denison (1B) set the state record for most double plays in a game with five. The Trojans turned a 4-6-3 double play in the 1st and 2nd innings, a 5-4-3 double play in the 3rd and 4th inning, and finished the game with a 4-6-3 double play in the 7th inning.

CHHS also entered the AHSAA record book earlier this season by being hit by a pitch eight times in a victory over LAMP. Charles Henderson is currently represented in the record book in the following categories: most homeruns by a player in a game (3), most homeruns in an inning by a team (4), most consecutive homeruns in an inning by a team (4), most HBPs in a game (8), and most double plays turned in a game (5).

Thomas, Lawson Homer in Trojan Victory

The fifth ranked Trojans improved to 24-6 on the season with a 21-5 victory over Providence Christian. Seniors Michael Thomas and Jalin Lawson each blasted a three run homerun. Lawson finished the day 3-3 with six RBI, Thomas was 2-2 with three RBI. Luke Hastings was 2-2 with a double and three RBI, Chase Smartt added two RBI, and Austin Ingram hit a double and drove in two.

Lawson got the start and win on the mound, working four innings and striking out four. Luke Hastings pitched a scoreless fifth inning, striking out two.

CHHS plays at home on Tuesday against Enterprise on Senior Night. The 2012 seniors are Gregory Barnette, Austin Adler, Michael Fox, Jalin Lawson, and Michael Thomas. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 with Senior Night festivities beginning at 4:20.

Trojans Split on the Road

CHHS picked up a win over Trinity Saturday by a score of 12-5 before dropping a 6-3 decision to St. Luke's.

Against Trinity, Michael Fox picked up the win on the mound, striking out three. He was also 3-4 with a three run home run. Gregory Barnette was 4-5 at the plate, Jaline Lawson added a three run homerun, and Joey Denison was 3-5. Every Trojan starter had at least one hit.

In the St. Luke's game, Brantley LeCroy worked five innings and took the loss. At the plate Fox was 2-4 with an RBI and Chase Smartt also added two hits. Lawson had an RBI double.

CHHS travels to Dothan Monday to play Providence Christian. First pitch is at 5:00.

Trojans Get Road Sweep Over Northview

The #5 ranked Trojans of Charles Henderson improved their record to 22-5 with a sweep of Northview Friday. In game one, Houston Mabray was the winning pitcher in the 6-0 contest, working all seven innings and striking out two. He was also the beneficiary of five double plays turned by infielders Luke Hastings, Michael Fox, Jalin Lawson, and Joey Denison. At the plate, Denison was 3-4 with a double and and RBI. Fox and Chase Smartt each added hits, with Fox adding an RBI. Gregory Barnette and Tripp Blackmon also drove in runs.

In game two the Trojans won by a final margin of 10-2. Tripp Blackmon worked a complete game on the mound, striking out one and did not give up an earned run. Lawson and Denison each homered, Denison's a two run shot in the first inning and Lawson's a three run blast in the second inning. Fox finished 2-4 with an RBI, Smartt was 2-3 with an RBI, and Barnette was 1-3 with two RBI.

The Trojans return to action Saturday in Montgomery against Trinity and St. Luke's beginning at 11:00 am.

CHHS Finishes Area Play Unbeaten

Charles Henderson defeated Carroll 12-1 on the road Friday afternoon to finish 5A, area three play with a perfect 6-0 record.

Tripp Blackmon pitched five innings and struck out four to earn the win. Jalin Lawson pitched the final inning and struck out one without allowing a run.

Gregory Barnette led the way at the plate going 3-3 with a double, three RBI, and four runs scored. Austin Adler matched Barnette with four runs scored and added a single and stolen base. Jalin Lawson added four RBI on two hits while Joey Denison drove in two.

As area champions the Trojans will host a playoff series beginning on April 20 against either Tallassee or Russell County. This marks the fourteenth consecutive playoffs appearance for CHHS. The Trojans have not lost a home playoff series dating back to the 2006 season.

Trojans Win Area Title

Charles Henderson clinched the 5A, area three championship tonight with a 13-3 victory over Carroll at Troy University. The title means that CHHS will host a first round playoff series on April 20 and 21.

Houston Mabray moved his record to 3-0 in area play with his third complete game victory. He struck out four.

Joey Denison continued to stay hot at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, two run homerun, and five RBI. He has homered in three consecutive area games. Chase Smartt added two doubles with an RBI and Michael Fox had two hits. Luke Hastings had a single and stolen base while Austin Adler added a hit and RBI.

The Trojans complete area play tomorrow at Carroll at 3:00.

Trojans Advance Two Spots in 5A Poll

CHHS moved up two spots in the latest ASWA baseball poll, now checking in at the #7 spot after sweeping #4 ranked Rehobeth. Russell County remains the top ranked team followed by Hueytown, Spanish Fort, and Cullman. Hartselle is in the fifth spot, followed by St. Paul's and the Trojans. Briarwood Christian, Rehobeth, and Chilton County round out the top ten.

This marks the 35th consecutive poll that has included the Trojans, dating back to the first poll of the 2007 season.

Trojans' Win Streak Snapped at Nine

The Trojans of Charles Henderson saw their season-long win streak come to an end on the road at Dothan Tuesday afternoon. The streak was ended at nine games with a 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Dothan Tigers. Brantley LeCroy took the loss on the mound in his second outing of the year. Michael Fox and John Michael Stephens both pitched in relief of LeCroy. Offensively Fox had two hits and Freshman Austing Ingram was 1-2 with a double.

CHHS returns to action Thursday night in an area three match-up against Carroll. The game is at Charles Henderson and is scheduled for a 5:00 start. The Trojans can clinch the area championship with a victory.
