CHHS Advances to Quarterfinals with Sweep of Rehobeth

The Charles Henderson Trojans advanced to the quarterfinals of the 5A state playoffs for the third consecutive season with a 9-7, 8-4 sweep of Rehobeth Friday night at Hogan's Hole in Troy.

In game one Mitch McLeod worked all seven innings on the mound and struck out five. After Rehobeth scored two in the first inning, the Trojans answered with a double by K.D. Edenfield and single by Chance Shaver. Edenfield would later score on an error, and Shaver scored on Chase Connell's RBI groundout. The Rebels would score three in the second inning and hold a 5-2 lead until the fourth inning when Connell and Jalin Lawson led off the inning with back to back singles. Michael Fox drove in courtesy runner Tyler Dansby with a groundout to the third baseman and Edenfield followed with an RBI single to score Lawson. The Trojans' big inning came in the fifth, when Nathan Barron led off with a solo home run to tie the game at five. McLeod followed with a single and scored on a double off the bat of Connell. Pinch-hitter Dalton Harris reached on an error that allowed Dansby, who was running for Connell, to score. Fox followed with a single and a two RBI double from Edenfield capped the scoring for the Trojans.

Harrison Reeves took the mound in game two for Charles Henderson and worked three innings striking out three. Nathan Barron entered in relief and did not give up a run in four innings of work, striking out two. CHHS again scored two in the first inning when Quay Lawson drove in Shaver and McLeod with a two out double. With the score tied at 2-2 in the third inning Nathan Barron led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by McLeod. Lawson again came through with an RBI single to score Barron. In the fourth the Trojans strung together five consecutive hits off the bats of Shaver, Barron, McLeod, Quay Lawson, and Connell to score three runs. Barron and McLeod each drive in runs while Jalin Lawson worked a bases loaded walk to score McLeod. Edenfield's sacrifice fly scored Jalin Lawson in the sixth and Mitch McLeod led off the seventh with a double and scored on an error.

Charles Henderson will now travel to Beauregard to take on the Hornets on Friday in a best of three series.

2nd Round Top-Ten Showdown to be Aired Live on WTBF

The second round clash between the #1 ranked Charles Henderson Trojans and the #7 ranked Rehobeth Rebels will be aired live on WTBF in Troy. The series will take place at Frazier Field on the campus of CHHS. Game 1 is scheduled to air on 970 AM with air time scheduled for 4:15 and first pitch at 4:30. Game 3, if necessary, will also be live on 94.7 FM with an air time of 2:45 and first pitch at 3:00. Both games will stream live at www.wtbf.com.

Trojans Sweep Monroe County in First Round

The Charles Henderson Trojans earned a first round sweep Friday night at Hogan's Hole, defeating Monroe County 4-1 and 8-4.

In the opener Mitch McLeod worked all seven innings on the mound, striking out eight. He faced 22 batters, only one over the minimum. The only inning that was not a 1-2-3 inning was the fourth, when the Tigers used a leadoff single followed by a double to drive a run across.

Chance Shaver started the CHHS scoring in the top of the 1st inning. His blast to left-center field was his first career home run and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The Trojans would not score again until the sixth inning when Nathan Barron led off the inning with a solo homerun. Later in the inning Quay Lawson singled, stole second, and was driven in by Jalin Lawson. Jalin was later driven in by Michael Fox to give the Trojans the 4-1 margin. Shaver finished 2-3, and Jalin Lawson was 3-3.

Game 2 starter Nathan Barron worked three innings and allowed two hits. Harrison Reeves entered in the fourth and worked four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He allowed only two hits and threw only eight pitches in his final two innings.

For the second consecutive game, CHHS' first run came off a solo homerun in the first inning. Barron drove a pitch over the wall in left-center field, his second homerun of the day. Jalin Lawson followed in the second inning with a solo homerun of his own. Mitch McLeod finished the game 3-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Jalin Lawson was 3-4 with an RBI, stolen base, and two runs. K.D. Edenfield was 2-3. Reeves capped off the Trojan scoring with a two run homerun in the seventh inning, which was CHHS' fifth homerun of the day.

Charles Henderson will now host a second round series against the winner of the Rehobeth/Greenville series.

Trojans Remain #1 in Final ASWA Rankings

The Charles Henderson Trojans remained the #1 team in 5A in the state of Alabama according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll released Thursday. This marks the second straight week CHHS has claimed the top spot. The Trojans are followed by Southside-Gadsden, Cullman, St. Paul's, and Spanish Fort. Tallassee comes in at #6, Area 3 opponent Rehobeth checks in at #7, and Briarwood Christian is #8. Boaz at #9 and Beauregard at #10 round out the top ten.

1st Round Playoff Match-Up to Air Live on Radio

The first round playoff match-up between the Charles Henderson Trojans and the Monroe County Tigers will air live on WTBF. Game 1 is scheduled to air on 970 AM, with air time set for 4:15 and first pitch at 4:30. Currently Game 2 is not scheduled to air, but the if necessary game on Saturday would air on 94.7 FM. Both games will also be streaming live at www.wtbf.com.

Trojans Split with Stanhope-Elmore on Senior Night

The #1 ranked Trojans of Charles Henderson earned a split in their final preparation for the playoffs Tuesday night with a 7-2 victory followed by a 15-2 defeat.

In game one the Trojans were powered by Mitch McLeod, Chase Connell, and Jalin Lawson who each hit solo home runs. McLeod finished with three RBIs and Nathan Barron added two hits.

McLeod, Barron, Harrison Reeves, and Blake Hutchinson combined their efforts on the mound in the victory. McLeod started the game and was credited with the win after two innings of work. Barron worked the third and fourth, Reeves the fifth and sixth, and Hutchinson worked a scoreless seventh to close out the game.

In game two Barron homered and Jalin Lawson finished 2-2. Seniors Joel Agnew and Jawara White saw action in the nightcap.

Between games CHHS honored it's seven Seniors: Joel Agnew, Nathan Barron, K.D. Edenfield, Quay Lawson, Mitch McLeod, Chance Shaver, and Jawara White. These Seniors have won a total of 124 games in their four years at CHHS. They have won the 5A, Area 3 championship all four seasons and won the Enterprise Tournament in 2008 as well as the Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament in 2009 and 2010. They have been ranked as high as #2 in the state in the previous three seasons and achieved the #1 ranking in 5A for the first time in school history this season.

Next up for the Trojans is a first round playoff matchup against Monroe County at CHHS. The teams will square off in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 Friday, with a game three scheduled for 1:00 Saturday if necessary.

Trojans Sweep Doubleheader in Troy

CHHS won two games Saturday, defeating Brewbaker Tech 10-2 Saturday morning and Beauregard 2-1 Saturday night.

In the first game of the day played at CHHS, Nathan Barron earned the win against Brewbaker working four innings and striking out five. Blake Hutchinson worked the fifth and sixth innings and struck out one. Tripp Blackmon finished out the game on the mound, working a scoreless seventh inning.

Quay Lawson and Chase Connell led the Trojans at the plate by going 3-4 each. Lawson drove in four and was a homerun away from the cycle, Connell drove in three. Barron was 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base while K.D. Edenfield was 2-3 with a triple.

In the nightcap played at Troy University, the Trojans played their fourth game in three days and earned their second win over a top-ten 5A team in that stretch by defeating Beauregard 2-1. Harrison Reeves was credited with the win on the mound. After allowing back-to-back hits to the first and second batters of the game, Reeves allowed only one more hit in his five innings of work. He struck out one. Mitch McLeod finished the game by pitching the sixth and seventh innings and striking out one to earn the save.

Dalton Harris drove in both CHHS runs, one with a single in the second inning that scored McLeod and another with a single in the fourth that scored Quay Lawson. Barron was 2-3 with a triple and Connell and Jalin Lawson were both 1-2.

The Trojans return to action Tuesday night at Hogan's Hole for Senior Night. The doubleheader against Stanhope-Elmore begins at 4:30.

CHHS Drops Game to Rehobeth

CHHS suffered a rare home loss Friday night against the #8 team in 5A, the Rehobeth Rebels by a score of 9-7. Sophomore Michael Fox suffered the loss after working two innings on the mound and allowing two runs.

Chase Connell hit two doubles and drove in a run, while K.D. Edenfield finished 2-3. Nathan Barron, Mitch McLeod, Jalin Lawson, Harrison Reeves, and Michael Fox all drove in runs.

Trojans Claim Area Title

CHHS secured the 5A, Area 3 championship Thursday night with a road victory over #8 Rehobeth by a score of 14-3. Mitch McLeod worked six innings on the mound and struck out six to earn the win. Blake Hutchinson worked a scoreless 7th and struck out two.

McLeod added a 2-4 performance at the plate with a homerun and three RBI. Harrison Reeves also homered and scored three runs. Chance Shaver finished 2-4 with four RBI while Nathan Barron was 2-5 with an RBI. Chase Connell hit two doubles and drove in two runs.

The Trojans return to Hogan's Hole Friday for a 5:00 game against Rehobeth.



Trojans Claim #1 Ranking in 5A

The newest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll released on April 8 features Charles Henderson as the #1 team in the state in 5A. CHHS has an overall record of 23-6 and was ranked second last week. This is believed to be the first time in Trojan baseball history that CHHS has been voted to the top spot in the state.

Following the Trojans in the top five are Southside-Gadsden, St. Paul's, Cullman, and Spanish Fort. Tallassee checks in at #6, followed by Briarwood Christian at #7 and fellow Area 3 school Rehobeth at #8. Beauregard at #9 and Boaz at #10 round out the top ten this week.

Trojans Clinch Playoff Berth

The Trojans of Charles Henderson improved their area record to 4-0 Friday with a road victory over Carroll by a score of 9-2. CHHS dropped the second game, which does not count towards the area standings, by a score of 5-4.

In game one Harrison Reeves went the distance on the mound and struck out three. Quay Lawson finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three RBI. K.D. Edenfield was 2-4 with four runs scored while Chance Shaver added two hits, a run, a stolen base, and an RBI.

Blake Hutchinson took the loss in game two after working 5 1/3 innings and striking out three. Jalin Lawson and Chase Connell both finished 2-3 while Mitch McLeod and Shaver were 1-3.

CHHS returns to action at home Thursday against Rehobeth. A victory would secure the area three championship for the Trojans

Edenfield Chosen for North-South All-Star Football Game

Senior outfielder K.D. Edenfield has been chosen to participate in the AHSAA North-South All-Star Football Classic. Edenfield played quarterback and defensive back for the Trojans football team this year and will play defensive back for the South squad as they face off against the North at Alabama A & M University on July 16 at 7:00 p.m. This will be Edenfield's second AHSAA All-Star experience. He and fellow Senior Chance Shaver participated in the North-South baseball game in the Summer of 2009.

Trojans Remain Perfect in Area Play

Mitch McLeod was dominant on the mound and with solid defense and timely hitting the Charles Henderson Trojans improved to 22-5 overall and 3-0 in Area 3 play with a 4-0 victory over Carroll Thursday afternoon. McLeod worked a complete game while striking out nine.

The scoring begain in the third for the Trojans when Sophomore Michael Fox knocked a one out single down the left field line. K.D. Edenfield followed with a double off the wall, and Chance Shaver came through with a sharply hit ball to second base to score Fox from third. After Edenfield was thrown out at the plate, Sophomore Jalin Lawson delivered a two run homerun to right field that drove in Shaver. In the fifth inning, Quay Lawson drove home his brother Jalin, who reached on a single, to provide an insurance run for the Trojans. McLeod also added a double for CHHS.

Charles Henderson returns to the field Friday at Carroll for a 4:30 double header. With a victory in game 1 the Trojans would assure themselves of a spot in the playoffs.

Trojans Advance One Spot in ASWA Rankings

The Charles Henderson Trojans moved up one spot to the #2 ranking in 5A in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association Poll released on April 1. Area 3 is now represented by two teams, as Rehobeth is ranked #8. Southside Gadsden remains in the top spot followed by the Trojans. St. Paul's, Beauregard, and Spanish Fort fill the 3, 4, and 5 positions. Cullman follows at #6, then Briarwood Christian at #7, Rehobeth at #8, Tallassee at #9, and Boaz rounds out the top ten at #10.
