CHHS Splits with Northview

The Trojans of Charles Henderson traveled to Dothan Thursday night to take on the Cougars of Northview and earned a split.

CHHS dropped game one by a score of 8-6. Houston Mabray took his first loss of the year on the mound working four innings and striking out four. He only allowed one earned run. Joey Denison was 2-4 in the game with a double and an RBI. Morgan Shaver was 2-2 with a double and RBI.

The Trojans bounced back in game to and defeated Northview 16-4 in six innings. Tripp Blackmon was credited with the win on the mound. He struck out four in four innings of work. Hunter Baggett led the team offensively going 4-4 with four singles and a hit by pitch. Blackmon was 3-3 with three RBI, Chase Smartt was 2-3 with three RBI, and Joey Denison added a doulbe and two RBI. Austin Ingram added three singles and three RBI.

Charles Henderson is now 6-1 on the season. They host Oak Mountain and Dothan Saturday at Hogan's Hole. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00.

Trojans Win Sikes Tournament Championship with Victories over Eufaula, Enterprise

Charles Henderson was crowned the champions of the 2013 Sikes Memorial Tournament after defeating Eufaula 5-2 and Enterprise 4-3 on Saturday. CHHS and Smith Station both finished the tournament with 3-0 records, so the tiebreaker of runs allowed was used to determine a champion. The Trojans allowed six runs on the weekend while the Panthers allowed eight.

In the first game of the day Brantley LeCroy started on the mound and pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out two before a lengthy rain delay forced him to be removed. Austin Ingram came on in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings and also struck out two. The Trojans' big inning came in the first when Hunter Baggett led off the game with a double and was followed by a Tripp Blackmon hit by pitch. Chase Smartt followed with an RBI single to get the Trojans on board. Joey Denison and Ingram both drove in runs on sacrifice flies to push the lead to 3-0. Eufaula answered with two runs in the second inning to make it a 3-2 game. CHHS extended the lead in the sixth when Blackmon drew a walk and stole second. Denison's single to right drove in Blackmon then got past the right fielder allowing Denison to come all the way around and score.

In the nightcap Charles Henderson earned a thrilling 4-3 win over Enterprise. Houston Mabray pitched his second complete game of the season striking out three. The Wildcats got the early lead with three runs in the third inning. The Trojans were held scoreless until their final at-bat of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Baggett got things going with his third hit of the game and was followed by Blackmon drawing a walk. Smartt singled to load the bases for Denison who drove a double into right-center field to knot the score at 3-3. Ingram then singled to drive in Denison and give CHHS their first lead of the night.

The wins kept the Trojans undefeated on the young season, going 5-0 in the first week of games. CHHS will travel to Northview on Thursday for a double header beginning at 4:30.

Trojans Top Providence to Begin Sikes Tournament

Charles Henderson moved to 3-0 on the young season with a 6-1 victory over Providence Christian to kick off the 2013 Sikes Memorial Tournament. Luke Hastings got the start on the mound and went five innings allowing only one run and striking out five. Blake Craft came on in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with the big hit coming off of the bat of Austin Ingram. His three run home run scored Joey Denison and Tripp Blackmon who both reached on singles. Denison's single early in the inning scored Hunter Baggett who led off the inning with a single. Providence added a run in the second inning to draw to 4-1. CHHS extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Baggett doubled to drive to drive in Luke Hastings who reached on a single.  Baggett later scored on an error.

CHHS continues play in the Sikes Tournament tomorrow with a doubleheader against Northridge and Eufaula. Both games will be played at Troy University. The Northridge game begins at 3:00 and the Eufaula game begins at 7:00.

Trojans Sweep Opening Day Double Header

The Charles Henderson Trojans started the season 2-0 with wins over Jackson and G.W. Long in games played at LBW in Andalusia.

In game one the Trojans defeated Jackson by a score of 4-2. Senior Houston Mabray pitched a complete game and struck out four. CHHS scored all of their runs in the sixth inning when Cole Wilson led off with a single that was followed by a Morgan Shaver walk. Hunter Baggett and Tripp Blackmon followed with consecutive hit by pitches and pushed across the games first run. Chase Smartt followed with a 2 RBI single to push the score to 3-0. Joey Denison drove in Blackmon with a single to extend the lead to 4-0. Jackson scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th before Mabray induced a groundout to end the game.

In game two CHHS beat G.W. Long by a score of 6-2. Senior Tripp Blackmon got the start on the mound and pitched four innings striking out one. Xavius Burden entered the game in the top of the 5th in a bases loaded jam and got out of the inning only allowing one run. Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, the Trojans erupted for five runs. Wilson reached base on an error and Shaver reached base on a fielders choice. Baggett singled and Blackmon reached on an error by the second baseman. Chase Smartt tripled home Baggett and Blackmon to give CHHS the lead. After Smartt scored on a wild pitch Denison singled and was followed by an Austin Ingram single. Denison scored from third on a balk to push the lead to 6-2.

The Trojans open their home schedule on Thursday at Hogan's Hole in the first game of the 12th Annual Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament against Providence Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00.
