Trojans Earn Two Victories in Sikes Tournament

CHHS finished the 11th annual Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament with a record of 2-1 and victories over Dora and Northridge. The Trojans dropped a 5-3 decision to Smith Station on Saturday. CHHS' overall record is now 5-3 on the year.

Thursday night Jalin Lawson's second inning grand slam broke the game open and CHHS went on to defeat Dora by a score of 13-3. Luke Hastings earned his first victory of the year on the mound. Lawson finished 3-4 at the plate with 5 RBI and two runs scored. Chase Smartt and Tripp Blackmon each had a pair of doubles. Joey Denison was 2-4 with an RBI and Gregory Barnette was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

Friday afternoon the Trojans defeated Northridge by a score of 11-6. Michael Fox earned the victory on the mound striking out three. Houston Mabray earned the save entering the game in the 5th inning to protect a 7-6 Trojans lead. After allowing an unearned run in the top of the first, CHHS fought back with four runs in the bottom of the first on RBI hits by Lawson, Denison, and Blackmon. The Jaguars scored three in the top of the third to tie the game but Denison led off the bottom part of the third with a solo blast to left center field to recapture the lead. Luke Hastings added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-4.

The Trojans found themselves in a jam in the top of the fourth with bases loaded and one out. Third baseman Luke Hastings snagged a shot down the third baseline, stepped on third and threw across to Denison for an inning ending double play. CHHS added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back to back doubles by Lawson and Denison. Barnette and Smartt followed with RBI singles of their own to set the final margin at 11-6.

On Saturday the Trojans fell short against Smith Station, dropping the contest by a 5-3 score. Tripp Blackmon went the distance on the mound and allowed three earned runs while striking out three. Lawson hit a solo homerun in the first inning and finished 2-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Down 5-1 entering the sixth inning, the Trojans narrowed the gap when Lawson scored on a triple by Barnette. Barnette then stole home during the next at-bat to cut the margin to 5-3.

Baldwin County defeated Smith Station by a score of 11-5 to win the tournament championship at Riddle-Pace Field on the campus of Troy University Saturday night.
