Trojans Win Sikes Tournament Championship with Victories over Eufaula, Enterprise

Charles Henderson was crowned the champions of the 2013 Sikes Memorial Tournament after defeating Eufaula 5-2 and Enterprise 4-3 on Saturday. CHHS and Smith Station both finished the tournament with 3-0 records, so the tiebreaker of runs allowed was used to determine a champion. The Trojans allowed six runs on the weekend while the Panthers allowed eight.

In the first game of the day Brantley LeCroy started on the mound and pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out two before a lengthy rain delay forced him to be removed. Austin Ingram came on in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings and also struck out two. The Trojans' big inning came in the first when Hunter Baggett led off the game with a double and was followed by a Tripp Blackmon hit by pitch. Chase Smartt followed with an RBI single to get the Trojans on board. Joey Denison and Ingram both drove in runs on sacrifice flies to push the lead to 3-0. Eufaula answered with two runs in the second inning to make it a 3-2 game. CHHS extended the lead in the sixth when Blackmon drew a walk and stole second. Denison's single to right drove in Blackmon then got past the right fielder allowing Denison to come all the way around and score.

In the nightcap Charles Henderson earned a thrilling 4-3 win over Enterprise. Houston Mabray pitched his second complete game of the season striking out three. The Wildcats got the early lead with three runs in the third inning. The Trojans were held scoreless until their final at-bat of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Baggett got things going with his third hit of the game and was followed by Blackmon drawing a walk. Smartt singled to load the bases for Denison who drove a double into right-center field to knot the score at 3-3. Ingram then singled to drive in Denison and give CHHS their first lead of the night.

The wins kept the Trojans undefeated on the young season, going 5-0 in the first week of games. CHHS will travel to Northview on Thursday for a double header beginning at 4:30.
