Trojans Sweep Huntsville, Austin

CHHS improved to 21-2 on the year with a sweep of two 6A opponents, Huntsville and Austin. The 21-2 mark is the best ever by a Charles Henderson team. The 1980 squad opened the season 20-0 before dropping two games. The 2007 team was 19-1 out of the gate.

In game one the Trojans defeated Huntsville, the #4 team in 6A, by a score of 7-4. Starting pitcher Xavius Burden gave up four runs in the first inning but settled down to strike out three and didn't allow another run. Luke Hastings relieved Burden in the fifth and pitched 2 1/3 of scoreless relief for the save.

After a two run first inning CHHS took the lead in the third inning when Tripp Blackmon singled and Chase Smartt doubled. Joey Denison and Austin Ingram each followed with RBI singles to tie the game at four. Luke Hastings bunted the runners over to allow Blake Craft to drive in Ingram. Craft added an RBI single in the fifth to extend the lead and Ingram's RBI single in the sixth pushed the score to 7-4.

In game two CHHS defeated Austin 11-1 in six innings. Senior Tripp Blackmon pitched all six innings and struck out eight. Denison was 3-3 with an RBI and Morgan Shaver was 3-3 with two RBI. Baggett and Blackmon each drove in two runs.

Charles Henderson concludes pool play in the Gulf Coach Classic Wednesday against Baldwin County High School at Baldwin County. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00.
