Trojans Sweep Headland

CHHS traveled to Headland Friday night and swept the Rams by scores of 4-2 and 11-1. The wins improved the Trojans' record to 26-2 overall and 4-0 in 4A, Area 3 play.

Tripp Blackmon's performance on the mound and clutch hit in the 7th inning paced the Trojans in game one. He pitched a complete game, striking out six and not allowing an earned run. Charles Henderson trailed 2-0 entering the sixth inning when Chase Smartt doubled down the right field line for the Trojans' first hit of the game. Joey Denison followed with a single to drive in Smartt and put CHHS on the board. Trailing 2-1 in the 7th inning, John Johnson led off with a single and was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Xavius Burden. Down to his final strike in a 2-2 count, Hunter Baggett fouled off two pitches before drawing a walk. Blackmon was also down to his final strike before lacing a single down the right field line to score Johnson and tie the game at 2. Blackmon advanced to second base on the throw to third. He and Baggett were driven in on Smartt's single to center field to give the Trojans their first lead of the day at 4-2. Blackmon worked a three up-three down 7th inning to close out the win.

In game two the late inning heroics were not needed as CHHS cruised to an 11-1 victory in six innings. Smartt started the scoring in the first inning with a two run homerun to put the Trojans ahead 2-0. Denison drove in a run in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0. CHHS pulled away in the fourth inning with four runs off the bats of Smartt, Denison, and Luke Hastings. Rhett Tucker led off the sixth inning with a pinch hit double that sparked a four run inning and ended the game.

Hastings got the start on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out seven. Blake Craft pitched the fifth inning and struck out two. Ingram finished the game with a scoreless sixth inning and a strikeout.

Area 3 play continues on Tuesday when CHHS hosts Ashford at 4:30.
